Album Review by: DJ Fox
Now, disclaimer, this band has more than 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, but they are under 1 million, I made sure of it. I mentioned this before but I had a really hard time finding anyone 400,000 or lower.
Released in April of 2023, Good Kid 3 tells a story of self-doubt, love, and growth. For example, their song "Mimi's Delivery Service", while inspired by the Studio Ghibli movie Kiki's Delivery Service, is noted by the band to be about self-doubt and being unable to help someone close to you. It has an upbeat and peppy background track, with an impressive yet simple guitar riff that plays during the verse and matches the chorus. The lyrics are sort of the opposite, emanating the feeling of just wanting to get away from the city with someone close, and help them with their problem, but being unable to. I want to note the guitar track, it plays behind the verse but also it matches the vocals in the chorus. I didn't notice it a whole lot until I started to listen more. It's something I'd really love to learn how to play myself.
While researching them, I also learned that the band even has a story behind their mascot, Nomu, which shares a name with one of their older songs. I definitely recommend checking them out, or checking my DJ session out, I tend to play them sometimes nowadays. Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. I look forward to seeing you there!
