I have been following Spencer Sutherland’s music since 2019 when I first discovered his single, “Sweater.” I was so entranced by his soulful, unique tone along with the intensity of how he sang his lyrics. Spencer has been releasing music since 2015 and his most recent release is his debut album, “In His Mania.” The album really showcases his unique style of powerful soul in his songs.
The track, “Out of Love,” is one that I believe really showcases his vocal range. The song itself gives off a choir feel with all the layering of his vocals. I also really enjoyed his added adlibs throughout the song and the intensity it creates for the lyrics. He sings about all the unknown feelings and thoughts that come with losing the feeling of love.
My personal favorite from the album is “Flower.” The instrumentals in this song are a lot stronger than the other tracks in this album. It gives off a more rock and soul sound to the lyrics of watching someone close to you change from who you once remembered them to be:
“'Cause it's breaking, it's breaking my heart
To see a change in the person you are
And it's making, it's making this hard
To watch you fall apart
You're still a flower, without the petals”
The album, “In His Mania,” consists of 11 songs and is 33 minutes and 11 seconds long. After listening to the entire album, I feel like I have just gone through a journey of Spencer’s innermost thoughts. The album holds such a wide variety and range of emotions in such a short amount of time. Spencer blends together a mix of soul, pop, and even a hint of rock influences in these tracks. I highly recommend giving this album a listen!
